"My job is to take care of you. I was appointed to do that by God. I will kill anyone who touches you. Do you understand?"

"...he knelt beside his father and held his cold hand and said his name over and over again." (McCarthy 281)

"He held the boy against him, cold to the bone. Dont lose heart, he said. We'll be alright."

"Listen to me, he said. When your dreams are of some world that never was or some world that never will be and you're happy again, then you'll have given up. Do you understand? And you can't give up, I won't let you."

"Because we're the good guys. Yes. And we're carrying the fire. And we're carrying the fire. Yes."

"The Poet and the Pendulum Part V: Mother and Father" by Nightwish

Be still my son, you're home
Oh when did you become so cold?
The blade will keep on descending
All you need is to feel my love
Search for beauty, find your shore
Try to save them all, bleed no more
You have such oceans within
In the end I will always love you

"Dead and Gone" by Justin Timberlake

I turn my head to the east
I don't see nobody by my side
I turn my head to the west
Still nobody in sight
So I turn my head to the north,
Swallow that pill
That they call pride
The old me is dead and gone,
The new me will be alright

"My Immortal" by Evanescence

When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have
All of me

Both the man and the boy in McCarthy's The Road exemplify the relationship between father and son. Anyone would expect the two to bond on a level only capable of a parent and a child, and yet the two's relationship goes much beyond the norm. As they travel and interact with one another, they form a friendship-relationship and trust deeper than most people ever gain from anyone. The father looks out for the boy's best interests, which in turn puts his own hunger and health out the window. His only concerns are the nourishment that the boy needs and making sure that no harm will come to his precious son. The boy is the man's link to humanity and vice versa. They only have each other in this gray, dead world and therefore their relationship is more closely knit, with no civilization to turn to. They truly only have each other to rely on. They are also connected by the "fire", which makes multiple appearances throughout the book. This metaphorical fire links the father and son even when they are separated in life. The fire, which is deep within both of them, protects their morality and seems to be a motivation to carry something greater than either of them possesses. Without each other, neither the father nor the son could have accomplished what takes place on their journey; they are each other's strength, and even when the father is gone, the boy is still motivated by his spirit.

- Do you think the father or the son had more worries?

- How did the cateclysmic event alter the relationship of father and son?

- How does the father and son's relationship differ from the mother and son's?
